Amitabha Buddha Preaching in the Pure Land
![]()
This Buddhist painting depicts Amitabha Buddha preaching, a work that was enshrined at Naewon-am hermitage on Mount Suraksan. Its horizontally elongated format reflects a style popular among Buddhist paintings of the nineteenth century, and Amitabha sits cross-legged upon a deep, ample wooden altar. Below the pedestal are inscribed prayers for the long life of members of the royal family, including the king, the queen, the crown princess, and the royal grandson. The painting was donated by court ladies (sanggung), who had become devoted patrons of Buddhism in the late Joseon period, and was painted by the monk-painters Gyeong-uk and Che-gyun.
