Black Polished Earthenware
![]()
This is a typical example of burnished black pottery excavated from the Goejeong-dong site in Daejeon. Usually shaped as a long-necked jar, its surface was coated with a mineral such as graphite and carefully polished before firing, giving it a black sheen. Burnished black pottery and clay-stripe pottery with a round-sectioned rim are the representative wares of the Early Iron Age in the central and southern Korean Peninsula. Since such pottery is also found in the Liaoning region of China, it is thought to have been transmitted from there along with other cultural elements.
