Furnace

This is a Goguryeo cooking stove excavated from Tomb No. 1 at Yongho-dong in Unsan-gun, North Pyongan Province, which was investigated by Sekino Tadashi in 1918. It was found, together with a gilt-bronze phoenix-shaped ornament and pottery, in what is presumed to be the burial chamber, and was made by casting. With its firebox and chimney set not in a straight line but to one side, it has an unusual form that resembles a miniature of the stove depicted in the kitchen mural of Anak Tomb No. 3. Although some think it was actually used, it is generally regarded as a myeonggi—a burial object made for the deceased to use in the afterlife.
