Gilt-bronze Shoes
![]()
These gilt-bronze shoes were excavated in 1917 from the eul coffin of Tomb No. 9 at Sinchon-ri in Naju, South Jeolla Province. The tomb, the largest mounded tomb in the Yeongsan River basin, also yielded a gilt-bronze crown, silver bracelets, beads, weapons, and farming tools. The shoes were made by joining one sole plate and two side plates with rivets, with diamond and dot patterns hammered across the outer surface and spike-like nails driven into the sole. The upturned toe and the two-piece side construction are typical features of Baekje footwear, also seen in examples from the Tomb of King Muryeong in Gongju and the Ipjeom-ri tomb in Iksan.
