Hongwu Ritual Code

'Hongwu' was the reign title of Zhu Yuanzhang, founding emperor of Ming China, and the Hongwu yeje (Hongwu Ritual Code) is a Ming ritual code—compiled after examining the rites of successive dynasties—that sets out the ceremonies and norms of the imperial house and government. Its exact date of publication is unknown. Its contents are divided into eleven sections, including the procedures for congratulatory court rites, the etiquette for envoys coming and going, document formats, and regulations on officials' stipends. The Hongwu yeje came to Korea in the late Goryeo period and was widely used for diplomatic procedures with Ming and for official document formats until the National Five Rites (Gukjo orye-ui) were established under King Seongjong.
