Landscape-patterned Brick
![]()
These decorative bricks epitomize the art of Baekje's Sabi period; eight types in all were excavated from the Oe-ri site in Buyeo, each measuring roughly 29 cm per side and about 4 cm thick. Two of them bear landscape designs: pointed rocks rise above stylized waves, and a mountain of three peaks recalls a painted landscape. One brick even depicts what appears to be a mountain temple and a monk among the peaks, lending it both Daoist and Buddhist overtones. With its balanced, symmetrical composition, the supple curves of mountains and clouds, and even a sense of perspective, it is a masterpiece that reveals one facet of Baekje painting.
