White Porcelain Underglaze Blue Epitaph Tablet of Haeangun

This is the funerary epitaph (myoji) of Prince Haean (1511-1573), a royal grandson of King Seongjong and a son of King Jungjong by a concubine. Written in cobalt blue on white porcelain, it records, in order, his name and courtesy name, his status, his mother Lady Hong (Sugui Hong), his birthday, his enfeoffment as Prince Haean at the age of nine, his character, the date of his death (the 4th day of the 8th month, 1573), his burial at Sinhyeol-ri in Yangju, his wives Lady Yu of Jinju and Lady Sin of Geochang, his children, and finally a eulogistic inscription (myeong).
